How long does it take to visit the Vatican Museums, and when is the best time to go?
Updated October 28, 2026
Quick answer
Allow 2 to 3 hours for the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel: that is how long the Museums visits we sell last, over about 7 km of galleries. If you add St. Peter's Basilica, combined visits last 3 to 4 hours, and the dome adds more time. The best time to visit the Vatican Museums is first thing, at the 8:00 a.m. opening.
The Vatican Museums describe their route as seven kilometers of galleries, and seeing all of it in one visit is not realistic. What sets your real time is the opening hours: they are open Monday to Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., last entry is at 6:00 p.m., and the rooms start clearing 30 minutes before closing. If you go in at the last slot, you have an hour and a half of useful visiting time.
Museums and Sistine Chapel
The Museums and Sistine Chapel visits we sell last 2 to 3 hours: the night tour, 2 hours; the skip-the-line ticket with a host and the ticket with access to the Basilica, 2.5 to 3 hours. On your own, the time depends on how long you linger in the Raphael Rooms, the Gallery of Maps or the Pio-Clementino Museum. With a visit of a few hours you have to choose, and time goes fast in the first rooms. If you want to decide beforehand what to see, look at the Vatican Museums highlights.
St. Peter's Basilica and the dome
St. Peter's Basilica opens every day from 7:00 a.m. and entry has no price, but first you go through the security check under the right-hand colonnade of the square. The basilica, dome and grottoes tour we sell lasts 1.5 to 2.5 hours. The dome takes time and legs: the elevator goes up to the terrace, and from there about 320 narrow, spiraling steps remain to the top. Visits combining the Museums, the Sistine Chapel and the Basilica last 3 to 4 hours; the private tour lasts 3 hours and covers about 3.2 km on foot.
Best time to go, and lines
The quietest time is first thing: the Museums open at 8:00 a.m., and there is an early-entry Vatican Museums ticket of 3 to 3.5 hours that includes the Basilica. June, July and August are the busiest months, and in high season the security check can take more than 30 minutes even with a booked ticket. Avoid Wednesday morning if you want to see the Basilica: tour operators warn that it closes for the Pope's general audience. On Sundays the Museums are closed, except the last Sunday of the month.
Half a day or a full day
With half a day you can see the Museums and the Sistine Chapel properly, or the Basilica with the dome, but not both at an easy pace. If you want both, start with the Museums first thing and leave the Basilica for afterward: it is open until 7:00 p.m. from 26 October 2026 to 28 March 2027, and the dome until 5:00 p.m. in that period.
