What you'll see
Quick answer
A Vatican Museums ticket costs 20 € at the ticket office and 20 € + 5 € booking fee on the official website, and it includes the Sistine Chapel: there is no ticket for the Chapel alone. St Peter's Basilica is free to enter; the dome is not (22 € by lift, 17 € by the stairs). The Museums open Monday to Saturday from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, with last entry at 6:00 pm, and close on Sundays except the last Sunday of the month, which is free. That leaves you one decision: go on your own with a timed ticket, or pay more for a guided tour that also takes you into the Basilica. What most people forget is the dress code: shoulders and knees covered.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to get into the Vatican?
The official Vatican Museums ticket with the Sistine Chapel costs 20 € at the ticket office, or 20 € + 5 € booking fee online. The reduced ticket costs 10 € (+5 € online). St Peter's Basilica is free to enter; the dome costs 22 € by lift or 17 € by the stairs.
Does the Vatican Museums ticket include the Sistine Chapel?
Yes. The Vatican Museums ticket gets you into the Museums and the Sistine Chapel, only on the day it is issued for. There is no ticket for the Sistine Chapel alone: it sits at the end of the Museums route.
Which day are the Vatican Museums free?
The last Sunday of each month, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm with last entry at 12:30 pm, unless it falls on Easter, June 29 or December 25, 26 or 31. You cannot book that day and the line is usually long.
Where do you buy the official tickets?
The only official online ticket site is tickets.museivaticani.va, according to the Museums themselves, which warn about websites with similar domains that charge considerably more. This site is not the official website: it compares the official ticket with a booking partner's tickets and tours.
What should you wear?
Shoulders and knees covered. The Museums do not admit sleeveless or low-cut tops, shorts above the knee, miniskirts or caps, and the Basilica asks for trousers or skirts below the knee.
