What's included and what isn't: St Peter's Basilica is separate

The ticket includes the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel in one visit: the chapel is at the end of the Museums route and has no ticket of its own. If you choose the audio guide option, you pick it up at a desk inside the Museums. It does not include a guide, St Peter's Basilica or the dome. The Basilica is free, but you enter it from St Peter's Square, after the security check under the right-hand colonnade, and the listing warns that entry depends on capacity control. If you want all three visits in one booking, look at the combo ticket with St Peter's Basilica.

Price compared with the official ticket

This ticket costs from $37, while the official one costs 25 € online (20 € + 5 € booking fee) or 20 € at the ticket office without a reservation. You pay 8 € more than on the official website; in exchange, you have another way to buy when the official site has no space in your slot, and you can add the audio guide. The official reduced ticket is 10 € (+5 € online) for ages 7 to 18 and students up to 25 with ID. Children under 7 go free. On the last Sunday of each month entry is free, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. All the rates are on the Vatican Museums ticket prices page.

How the time slot works

When you book you pick a day and a time, and the ticket is valid only for that date and slot: don't arrive early or late. The Museums open Monday to Saturday from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, with last entry at 6:00 pm, and staff start clearing the rooms 30 minutes before closing. They close on Sundays, except the last one of the month, and on Vatican holidays; for the rest of 2026, November 1 and December 8, 25 and 26. June, July and August are high season. Before choosing a time, check the Vatican Museums hours.

On the day: entry, security check and the walk to the Sistine Chapel

You arrive at the Viale Vaticano entrance, show your ticket and go through an airport-style security check. The listing warns that in high season that wait can exceed 30 minutes, even with a booked ticket. Large backpacks, umbrellas and tripods go to the cloakroom, which is free. Then some 7 km (about 4.3 miles) of route lie ahead before the Sistine Chapel, where photos and video are not allowed and silence is requested. Cover your shoulders and knees: no tank tops, shorts above the knee, miniskirts or caps. We go into detail on the Vatican dress code page.

Is it worth it without a guide?

Yes, if you want to go at your own pace and the audio guide or your own reading is enough: it is the cheapest Museums ticket on this website and it does not depend on a group's schedule. Less so if it's your first visit and you want someone to explain what you see. For that there is the guided tour with the Sistine Chapel and Basilica, with a Spanish-speaking guide option, from $71, or the ticket with an audio guide on your phone, from $42. To work out the time, read how long it takes to see the Vatican Museums, and compare all the Vatican tickets.

  • 1 of 10 says the entrance location they were sent was wrong

Frequently asked questions

Does the Vatican Museums ticket include the Sistine Chapel?

Yes. The Sistine Chapel is part of the Vatican Museums route and you visit it on the same ticket; there is no ticket for the chapel alone. It is at the end of the route, so leave time to reach it before the rooms are cleared.

Where do you buy official Sistine Chapel tickets?

The only official online shop is tickets.museivaticani.va, at 20 € + 5 € booking fee; at the ticket office they cost 20 €. The Museums warn about websites with similar domains that charge much more. This page links to a $37 resale ticket with an optional audio guide.

Can I enter St Peter's Basilica with this ticket?

It is not included. The Basilica is free and you enter from St Peter's Square, after the security check under the right-hand colonnade. From October 26, 2026 it opens every day from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm.

What happens if the hours change on the day of my visit?

The listing warns that hours can change because of special events in the Museums, the Sistine Chapel and the Basilica. As this ticket is non-refundable, check the Museums' official calendar before booking.

Do children pay for entry?

Children under 7 enter free with valid ID. Ages 7 to 18 have a youth ticket, also with ID. Strollers are allowed in the Museums, which have changing tables and a nursing room.

Can you take photos in the Sistine Chapel?

No: no photos or video, with any device, and silence is requested. In the rest of the Museums you can take photos without flash for personal use, without a tripod or selfie stick.
